In his fourth letter to Pope Leo XIII, asking for the renewal of the Church and the return to the Holy Spirit, Blessed Elena Guerra (1835-1914) spoke of a "universal revival for
so many weak Christians." I also believe that when Vatican II, in Lumen Gentium 8, says that the Church needs "always the need to purify herself" and that "she seeks penance and
renewal", is a way of saying: The Church always needs revival! Revival is always the awakening of the Spirit in individuals who open themselves to God in relatively difficult
times.
It is always an initiative of the Spirit that ends up generating a spiritual renewal, affecting in some way some kind of social reform, always in opposition to the structures of
sin and death. Revival is a powerful outpouring of the Spirit. And because of this, it accompanies the whole history of salvation. From the action of the Paraclete in creation
until the constitution of the Church of Christ in the apostolic age, God never deprived mankind of rains of revivals. Revival is what Aparecida asks when he says: "We need a new
Pentecost!" And again: "We expect a new Pentecost that frees us from weariness, from disillusionment, from accommodation to the environment; we expect a coming of the Holy
Spirit that renews our joy and hope. " Revival is also a movement of holiness insofar as the communicated Spirit generates new men and women of God into a new world. It
generates in the believer the certainty of faith that God is the friend of man, the presence of the Lord is felt in an exceptional, mysteriously visible way. They are like
spiritual waves that pour out in the heart and in life as in the time of the apostles.
Revival is the Spirit living actively in the heart of the believer who is docile to him! Revival is not feeling, but knowing that God is in me and I am in God. And this is the
work of the Spirit! I add somewhat to the characteristics of the revival hitherto quoted from a Protestant literature: "For revival to happen in the life of a believer or a
group of believers, there must be repentance. In the past, when a revival took place, people were confronted with their sin and confessed it. Until that happened, nobody was
fanned. " Otherwise, we can say that revival is a grace also for repentance and life change, conversion. Such a revival can change an individual, a family, a church, a
community, the peoples of the world ... Revival became the main working tool of Pentecostalism, a Christian charismatic movement that was destined to change the face of 21st
century Christianity. It is interesting to know that even among charismatic Protestants, the protagonism of Leo XIII and Elena Guerra as the initiators of the 20th century,
known by them as "the century of the Holy Spirit", is recognized. This is proof that the authentic revival will always pass through the true Church of Christ and will reach the
other non-Catholic Christian communities through the Christological and Pentecostal prayer of our Church.
After all, the Spirit blows where it wants and revival is not a monopoly of Catholics or Protestants. It is intended for all men and women who are open-hearted to receive the
Sweet Soul Guest. The desire to see the glory of God, a Catholic charismatic woman once told me, the desire to see him face to face is one of the most important keys to the
revival and fulfillment of God's purposes on earth. On another occasion she told me, "We only experienced a revival, when something that was dead comes back to life." Yes,
brethren, revival is the supernatural movement of the Spirit, Lord who gives life, touching again the natural to restore the divine life in the heart of man often plundered by
the devil and his angels. Revival, finally, goes through suffering. There is no revival without pain .... There is a price for revival. Are we willing to pay it?
